Liberty Bell, Philadelphia, USA

USA-41, originally uploaded by Abhishek's Received Postcards.

The Liberty Bell, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is one of the most prominent symbols of the American Revolutionary War. It is a familiar symbol of independence within the United States and has been described as an icon of liberty and justice.
According to tradition, its most famous ringing occurred on July 8, 1776, to summon citizens of Philadelphia for the reading of the Declaration of Independence. Historians today consider this highly doubtful, as the steeple in which the bell was hung had deteriorated significantly by that time. The bell had also been rung to announce the opening of the First Continental Congress in 1774 and after the Battle of Lexington and Concord in 1775.
The Liberty Bell was known as the "Independence Bell" or the "Old Yankee's Bell" until 1837, when it was adopted by the American Anti-Slavery Society as a symbol of the abolitionist movement.

Sojourner Truth (1797 – November 26, 1883) was the self-given name, from 1843, of Isabella Baumfree, an African-American abolitionist and women's rights activist. Truth was born into slavery in Swartekill, New York. Her best-known speech, Ain't I a Woman?, was delivered in 1851 at the Ohio Women's Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio.

Battle Creek, Michigan is home for the world's largest sculpture honouring the thousands of southern slaves and fugitives who fled north during the 1840's and 1850's. Travelling by night, hiding in barns and basements hide-a-ways by day, the movement was known as the Underground Railroad.

Amish Country/Pennsylvania Dutch Country, USA

USA-37, originally uploaded by Abhishek's Received Postcards.

Pennsylvania Dutch Country refers to an area of southeastern Pennsylvania, United States that by the American Revolution had a high percentage of Lutherans. There were also German Reformed, Moravian, Amish, Mennonite and other German sectarian inhabitants. It is also a place where the Deitsch language was historically common. The term was used in the middle of the 20th century as a description of a region with a distinctive Pennsylvania Dutch culture, but in recent decades the composition of the population is changing and the phrase is used more now in a tourism context than any other.

I got this card with a very nice Halloween envelope and letter that I would like to share.

Elwha River Valley, USA

USA-32, originally uploaded by Abhishek's Received Postcards.

The Elwha River is a 45-mile-long river located on the Olympic Peninsula in the U.S. state of Washington. From its source at Elwha snowfinger in the Olympic Range of Olympic National Park it flows generally north to the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Most of the river is contained within Olympic National Park. There are two dams on the river's lower course, both of which are scheduled to be removed.

The river is one of the only in the Pacific Northwest to contain all 5 species of Pacific Salmon and also contained four other anadromous trout species. Prior to the construction of the dams, approximately 400,000 adult salmon returned to the river each year to spawn in over 70 miles (110 km) of river habitat. Today, less than 4,000 salmon return each year in only 4.9 miles (7.9 km) of available habitat below the first dam.

One of the notable sites in the park is the Cliff Palace. This ruin is the largest and best-known of the cliff dwellings in Mesa Verde. The site has 150 identified rooms and 23 kivas. Although this and other Mesa Verde sites are large and well constructed, they demonstrate a long history of occupation and their architectural design is an aggregation of dwellings and storage spaces that developed slowly and randomly. Accurate archaeological information from this site has been limited due to several decades of digging and collecting at the turn of the Twentieth century.

Picacho Peak State Park, Arizona, USA

USA-28, originally uploaded by Abhishek's Received Postcards.

Picacho Peak State Park is a park in the Arizona State Parks system, located between Casa Grande and Tucson just off Interstate 10 in Pinal County, Arizona. Its centerpiece spire, Picacho Peak, is visible for many miles rising above the desert floor. The summit rises to 3374' (1028 m) above mean sea level. Though appearing the remnant of a volcanic neck, it is now believed to be a tilted and eroded piece of rock overlain by a lava flow. Notwithstanding, the origins of the landform are apparent, as the peak is surrounded by an extensive lava field. The place name is redundant: "picacho" means "peak" in Spanish.

Kilauea Volcano - night action, USA

USA-22, originally uploaded by Abhishek's Received Postcards.

Kilauea is an active volcano in the Hawaiian Islands, one of five shield volcanoes that together form the Island of Hawai'i. In Hawaiian, the word kilauea means "spewing" or "much spreading", in reference to the mountain's frequent outpouring of lava.
Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, established in 1916, is a United States National Park located in the U.S. State of Hawai'i on the island of Hawai'i. It displays the results of hundreds of thousands of years of volcanism, migration, and evolution—processes that thrust a bare land from the sea and clothed it with complex and unique ecosystems and a distinct human culture. The park encompasses diverse environments that range from sea level to the summit of the earth's most massive volcano, Mauna Loa at 13,677 feet (4,169 m). Kilauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes, offers scientists insights on the birth of the Hawaiian Islands and visitors' views of dramatic volcanic landscapes. The park includes 1,348 square kilometres (520 sq mi) of land.
